Salon Krenek

Salon Krenek combines exhibition space, a concert hall, a creative center, and open spaces for encounters. In addition to the exhibition “Visiting Ernst Krenek (1900–1991),” concerts, lectures, and educational offerings invite you to explore music, culture, and social questions of our time, and to delve into the influence and work of Ernst Krenek and thus into the (musical) history of the twentieth century.

Salon Krenek is found in the revitalized Minoritenkloster in Krems/Stein. The Minoritenkirche, which dates from the thirteenth century, is one of the oldest mendicant churches north of the Alps. On Minoritenplatz, you can also visit Forum Frohner of the Krems Art Mile and the Sound Space Krems Minoritenkirche.

Become acquainted with the many-sided composer and author Ernst Krenek. Learn private and personal details, meet his many companions and patrons – including personalities such as Alma and Anna Mahler, Thomas Mann, Rainer Maria Rilke, Igor Stravinsky, and Oskar Kokoschka – and follow his career through a fascinating century.

Ernst Krenek’s openness for new styles made his work a unique reflection of the musical history of the twentieth century – from late-Romantic offshoots via twelve-tone music to magnetic tape compositions with electronic sounds. Dive into the music of his century. You will certainly also hear things that are less familiar, and can create twelve-tone music on your own at a participatory station. Also to be found in Studio Krenek is a rarity: a Buchla modular synthesizer from 1966/67.

Have you always wondered what it looks like inside a composer’s home? View photos from the 1930s of Ernst Krenek’s apartment in Vienna’s thirteenth district, where he lived until his emigration to the USA. Or stroll through the Kreneks’ comfortable living room in a digital reconstruction of their house in Palm Springs, California. Perhpas you will also discover one or the other piece of furniture in the exhibition.
